Goose season is set to open at the beginning of February, and in this Outdoors Report, John Jackson heads to the Lake Charles area to give you a head start.
"Too many Geese! What hunter would ever say those words ....but for those farmers with vast fields of crop land and marshes lush with vegetation....its a problem! Just take a look at the vast numbers of Snow geese in one area of Lake Charles ...Now multiply those fields by hundreds of miles from East to west and you see where these eating machines make an impact on the land,
This is why we have a conservation season ...something I look forward too after the duck season is over and I still have an itchy trigger finger!
This type of hunting allows the use of electronic game calls and unplugged shotguns to be legal and no limit on daily bag limits during this season...The reason for electronic calls is simple if you have ever been near a flock of snows...thousands of birds make a ton of noise and these guys are not an easy target to get into range.
So using calls that are loud enough to make these geese believe there is a flock on the ground is your best shot!
The second part to that equation is putting out large spreads of decoys to imitate a flock of this size! But if you get the correct setting it can certainly be one of the best hunts Louisiana has to offer!
