Oldest WWII vet from Ascension buried
PRAIRIEVILLE - The oldest veteran of World War II from Ascension Parish was buried Tuesday in Prairieville.
Iry J. Breaux passed away on June 27. He was 97.
Breaux was a member of the Army Air Corps during WWII. His official duty was airplane mechanic but because he could speak Cajun French he was also used as an interpreter, serving in England, Africa, and Italy.
"That generation was so giving of themselves," said Breaux's niece, Amelia Babin. "They knew that when they went into the military they were giving it their all. Their dedication was remarkable."
Breaux was well-known in Ascension parish, named honorary sheriff for a day in 2012. Parish President Tommy Martinez also declared July 22, 2012 "Iry J. Breaux Day."
