Office of Motor Vehicles to open in downtown BR

BATON ROUGE - If you hate waiting in line at the DMV, things are about to get easier if you work downtown.

A new Office of Motor Vehicles is set to open on Monday inside Baton Rouge City Court. It will be the first OMV located inside a courthouse in Louisiana, and will be staffed by existing courthouse employees trained by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

"We have three basic services for the public," Clerk of City Court Lon Norris said. "They can renew their existing driver's license here, also renew their vehicle registration here, and the other service is to provide for reinstatement of driving privileges."

Currently, if someone tries to settle a traffic issue at City Court they sometimes have to drive to the DMV to get their driving record straight. Now, everything can be handled under one roof.

"I think it's a good idea," Charles Taylor said. "Keep people from driving across town, if you have anything you have to bring back over here to deal with whatever ticket issues you may have...you take care of it here."

The equipment to run the OMV was purchased for about $25,000. It was done so with existing money in the budget. When the new OMV gets up and running, it will charge a $5 processing fee on top of what the DMV charges for services.

There are a few things this brand new OMV won't be able to help you with though. If you are trying to get your first license, trying tog et a new license plate or trying to transfer a title, you still have to go to the DMV.

It's the convenience that has some people willing to pay the fee.

"It saves you in gas," Taylor said. "Baton Rouge is not pleasant to drive in, in daily traffic anymore."

The new office will operate from 8:30 a.m. until 3  p.m.

Initially, only cash will be accepted. Next year, organizers hope to expand services and accept other forms of payments.
