O'Neal Lane expansion nearing completion

BATON ROUGE - The year-long construction project on O'Neal Lane will soon come to an end.

Soon the road will have more lanes, a new sidewalk and upgraded bridges thanks to the Greenlight Plan. It's a facelift residents say was necessary.

"The road was real bad going through there," resident Wandell Brandon said. "Couldn't really get where you needed to go."

Project engineer Mike Olson said the road was cracked in multiple places and needed to be replaced.

Now the area between George O'Neal Road and S. Harrell's Ferry Road will have five lanes instead of one each way. That expansion includes a center turning lane.

Along with a wider road, the bridge over Jones Creek is also receiving a big renovation — being made out of concrete instead of wood.

"We noticed one of the timber pilings had snapped and we had to shut down the bridge to traffic," Olson said. "It just showed the need for this roadway and the bridge replacement as a whole."

Work in the area started in early 2016 and is ahead of schedule. Officials believe all construction should be complete by Thanksgiving.
