Non-invasive surgery can give you a new look

BATON ROUGE - Cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Stephens joined us on News 2 at 4 Thursday afternoon to talk about non-invasive, surgical and minimally invasive procedures that can restore the youthfulness to your overall appearance.

The doctor cautions that there are some types and degrees of facial aging that require surgery to fix, while some non-invasive techniques such as botox, fillers and lasers may be able to take care of more minor signs of aging. Dr. Stephens said he commonly sees patients who are looking for a "quick fix" and throw thousands of dollars at techniques that do not provide results.

Brow lifts can be performed via traditional surgical methods or with minimally invasive (endoscopic) methods. This procedure can greatly improve the look of drooping or lined foreheads that Dr. Stephens says makes patients look less angry, sad or tired. The surgery involves the removal or alteration of the muscles above the eyes to smooth lines and raise the eyebrows to provide a more youthful appearance, according to Dr. Stephens. The procedure is often rolled in with an eyelid surgery (called blepharoplasty) or a face lift to completely revive a person's look.

While brow lifts are usually performed on patients older than 40 years of age to counteract the signs of aging, some younger people are affected by drooping or lined forehead skin due to muscle inactivity or inherited conditions and are eligible for the surgery. Dr. Stephens says the procedure is usually performed in a doctor's office or surgery center and requires only local anesthesia with minimal sedation.

The traditional brow lift is a much more involved process involving several incisions, removal of tissue, muscle adjustment and the application of stitches and clips until healing is complete. While it may sound painful, the surgeon says each patient is different and the traditional method works best in some scenarios.

Dr. Stephens also spoke about endoscopic brow lifts which take the traditional surgery and perform the adjustments with the aid of a device called an endoscope. Several small incisions are made behind the patient's hairline, and the endoscope is inserted so that Dr. Stephens can see beneath the skin without the need for large incisions. With access to the muscles underneath, the operating surgeon is able to move the eyebrows into a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and temporarily stitch or screw them in place. Like traditional brow lifts, brow lifts that are performed with an endoscope will require the patient to spend some time in bandages or gauze while the incision sites fully heal.

Both types of browlift procedures allow the patient to stay on their feet in the days that follow the surgery. He says patients are even able to wash their hair within a day or two of having the operation. Patients often return to work or school in 7-10 days or less with the swelling and bruising fading by the third post-operation week.
