Noisy Joor Road quieted by new pavement

CENTRAL - A fix to quiet down Joor Road in Central is finished after a paving experiment did not work.

People who drive down Joor Road say they could not carry on a conversation in the car and had to turn up the radio to tune out road noise before the fix. David Lawrence, who lives on Joor Road, says he can now enjoy the outdoors.

"You can come out now in the morning and drink your coffee and there's no noise. You just know that cars are going by, but that's all," he said.

In 2009, the state expanded Joor Road from two lanes to five to fix traffic problems. However, that fix caused new concerns for motorists and residents since the grooves of the pavement created a loud hum when cars drove by. The fix to quiet down the highway cost an extra $1.2 million. Lawrence and his wife feel the costly fix is worth every penny.

"I know it doesn't affect a lot of people, but the people that live on this road and those who drive it going back and forth to work are very thankful they did that," said Lawrence.

The work to repave the road finished in July.
