Nick Brossette: Motherly Comfort
BATON ROUGE - Leading up to national signing day, U-High running back Nick Brossette had a decision to make. Stay at home and attend LSU, or head to Texas to play for the Longhorns. It was a decision he would turn to his family for, but even they didn't know leading up to the deadline.
"It's a definite buzz around the house," Rita Brossette, Nick's mom, said. "Everybody's excited and talking, because we talk amongst ourselves as a family. To see where he's going to go and what he's going to do."
For Brossette, he would love to play early in his career.
"Both schools have told me I can play right away," Nick said. "It's just a matter of me working hard and everything."
But also, for he and his family, landing at a school where he feels at home is of the top priority, no matter if he's near or far.
"I don't want to just throw him out there," Rita said. "I want for him to go somewhere where he'll have family, it'll just be his extended family."
They say home is where the heart is. At the center of brossette's heart, is his mom rita brossette, who's been battling multiple myeloma cancer since 2008. Because of that, it would be easy for Nick to stay in the capitol city and play for the hometown Tigers. But it was motherly advice that helped him realize he must chase his dreams, wherever they lead him.
"It would be great to stay home and everything," Nick explains. "But my brother and her, she always tell me to do what's best for me, and that's what i'm trying to do."
"Just like every parent, I would love (for him to stay home)," Rita added. "But i know this is his choice, because this could impact the rest of his life."
Nick did select LSU over Texas, but no matter where he chose, he and his siblings success have already given Rita so much healing.
"It gets me up in the morning everyday. It keeps me going." Rita said. "At some point, if they just need to see me get up. It gives me the strength to get up everyday and go through the good days and the bad days."
