News 2 Investigates: Gang Neighborhoods

BATON ROUGE - The man at the center of a series of drug and racketeering indictments issued Wednesday in Baton Rouge featured prominently in a News 2 investigation into gangs in the city-parish.

A grand jury indicted Cornelius Wilson and 25 other people after a nearly year-long investigation into the local drug trade.

Wilson, known as "Ball Hed Red", spoke to News 2 about a report that more than 30 gangs were active in the parish limits. He described being shot and robbed by a street gang, and said they were often cliques of friends who grew up in the same neighborhood and looked out for each other as they got involved in criminal activity.

During the interview this March, Wilson said he knew nothing about drug dealing in Baton Rouge.

At the time, Wilson said gangs were sometimes the safest option for youth in Baton Rouge's most violent ZIP codes.

"We got people that do drugs in the area, people that are from the area," Wilson told News 2, "Oh no look, they breaking into Ms. Emma's house, they fixing to stop that...so it protects the area."

District Attorney Hillar Moore said multiple agencies tapped phones belonging to Wilson and others as part of the investigation. Of the 26 indicted, 15 including Wilson face racketeering charges, other face charges for possession of weapons and drugs.

Wilson is currently in the parish prison after he was arrested and accused of drug possession.
