New Roads mayor focus of theft, malfeasance grand jury probe
NEW ROADS - The mayor of New Roads received a grand jury target letter, the WBRZ Investigative Unit learned.
Mayor Robert Myer has been the focus of an Inspector General investigation into charges on a city credit card. The Investigative Unit found in a series of reports, at least $155,000 was charged in the last three years. Some of the purchases show Myer charged meals and mattresses.
The State Inspector General turned its findings over to the district attorney, who would not discuss a grand jury proceeding scheduled for Wednesday. But, the hearing likely involves the IG's case into Myer's spending.
"...A grand jury will be investigating charges against you for Felony Theft and Malfeasance in Office," the target letter alerts. The hearing is Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Myer doesn't have to testify, but can if he wishes.
Previously, Myer admitted some purchases were for personal use, but claimed the city was reimbursed for every last penny. In November, Myer released personal checks he said were payments for personal purchases on the card.
In a November 2014 story, Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto reported among the charges classified as "business" were an expensive hotel stay at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans and a laser tag event in Baton Rouge.
"The funny thing about Laser Tag is that was a summer youth program," Myer said then. "We employ kids for the summer and had their end of the year party at Laser Tag."
Nakamoto is in New Roads Friday. Watch for more on WBRZ News 2 Friday afternoon.
