New Roads Mayor denies illegal behavior at special meeting

NEW ROADS - New Roads Mayor Robert Myer addressed the city council for the first since his arrest last week at a special meeting Tuesday night at city hall.
Myer is accused of charging thousands of dollars on the city's credit card for his personal use. At the special meeting, Myer insisted that he was innocent.
"I categorically deny that I've done anything illegal," Myer said.
The council voted to have its own audit done to figure out who used the town's credit card and why. Myer left the meeting without taking any questions.
Myer was indicted last Wednesday on malfeasance and abuse of power charges following a grand jury hearing. A judge immediately issued a warrant for Myer's arrest. He later turned himself in and bonded out of Pointe Coupee Parish Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Myer claims his political enemies are behind the whole situation.
"The allegations seem to be spearheaded by opponents who are not interested in what is good for the city of new roads," Myer said.
Myer is accused of charging $134,000 on the city credit card for dinners, movie tickets and other questionable transactions between 2011 and 2014.
The short meeting was planned with the hope of reassuring citizens that the city government will be good stewards of city funds.
