New police radar too "big brother" for Denham Springs
DENHAM SPRINGS - City leaders here put the brakes on allowing police to use a laser gun with a camera system to track speeders on I-12.
The piece of technology, called DragonCam, works similar to controversial speed and red light camera systems by mailing tickets to offenders.
Police Chief Scott Jones says the laser would help assist officers but the Denham Springs City Council denied the plan Tuesday night.
The council voted down the measure, 2-3. Council members were concerned it would take the human element out of the situation.
"It's a hardship on the people who live and travel through Denham Springs," said Councilman John Wascom.
The laser gun is already used in Missouri and Kansas.
