New ordinance to keep adult entertainment out

DENHAM SPRINGS - City leaders approved a new ordinance aimed to keep adult entertainment out of Denham Springs.

The obscenity ordinance bans things which interest or depict sexual acts in an offensive way.

"Livingston Parish passed an identical ordinance about two years ago," said Mayor Jimmy Durving, "so if a business was going to come to Livingston Parish and apply for a permit, and it was prohibited, we wouldn't want them moving into Denham Springs."

The ordinance came about after inquiries about the possible opening of an adult business in the city.

"Based on the demographics of our city our parish, again it's a very conservative town, we have a significant amount of churches in the city," Durbin said.

Resident Kendra Aime has a young toddler, and said seeing sexual material would come with a lot of questions.

"I have a 2-year-old daughter I don't want to have to explain to her what that was this is kind of a small family close knit community out here," she said.

Aime said she doesn't want to see any of that in her town, and hopes to keep it the way it is.

"Other cities have things like that,if they want to do it, go somewhere, but we don't need it here," she said.

Mayor Durbin agrees.

"Got to go somewhere else, not in Denham Springs," he said.
