New library in the works for St. Helena Parish

ST. HELENA - A new library is in the works for St. Helena Parish.

After complaints the current library was too small to serve the entire parish, officials went to the state to ask for funds.

"Through capital outlay and appropriations, they gave us enough funds to start on a project. So, we're going to be beginning the design phase of a new library," said parish administrator Virginia Bell.

The state approved $100,000 for the first phase of the project. The parish put in a request for $1.34 million dollars to construct the library.

Residents said the new project is much needed.

"It's a small town but it really has a lot of people. And by it being such a small space, the internet. Everybody's not able to have internet at home," said Jason Ard, who goes to the library weekly.

According to Bell, only about a fifth of the parish's residents have high-speed internet. The library winds up filling the gap for those who don't have access to it at home.

Some residents said a new, bigger facility will help a lot.

"It would be more satisfying if we had the convenient space for the community to be able to access their needs," said Ard.
