New guidelines for the pre-K system
BATON ROUGE - Changes are coming to the state's lagging pre-kindergarten system.
Today the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted unanimously to approve a set of guidelines that will hold pre-K centers more accountable. With these guidelines, pre-K centers will be responsible for the performance of their students.
State Superintendent of Education John White said these guidelines will help the young students to be better prepared when they start kindergarten.
"If you don't get prepared at 3 and 4 years old, you're going to have trouble down the line. So we have a fragmented system that has too many kids slipping through the cracks right now," said Superintendent John White.
A pilot project will kick off the pre-K overhaul. It's scheduled for the 2013 - 2014 school year.
