New drug pops up in Ascension Parish
PRAIRIEVILLE - A new type of drug that goes by several different names has landed in Ascension Parish for the first time.
Butane hash oil, or BHO, was found inside a Prairieville house during a narcotics raid. The new drug caught the eye of Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office narcotics agents.
"It gets your attention," said Lt. Col. Bobby Webre. "What is this? You think about it, and it goes by several names. BHO which is butane hash oil, or some people call it dabs. Some people call it shatter. Some people call it butter. So it has different names."
Investigators say the drug is basically a marijuana extract that's nearly pure THC.
"One dab could probably equal three marijuana joints, so it is a pretty potent type of drug," said Webre.
To make BHO marijuana bud is packed tightly into a container and then blasted with butane to make a liquid that draws off the THC. The liquid is then cooked with certain ingredients until it turns into a paste. Investigators say there are dangers involved when cooking BHO.
"Water heaters, gas water heaters, gas stoves, pilot lights...it would actually blow up same as a clandestine meth lab," said Webre.
With this new type of drug on the streets, law enforcement plans to keep an eye out for BHO.
"We have to be very vigilant with it and pay attention to what's going on here," said Webre. "What you worry about is amateurs trying to do copycats and try to use these very flammable and dangerous chemicals."
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office has also see BHO recently surface. There's no confirmation from EBRSO about any cases in East Baton Rouge Parish.
