Neighbors start ribbon campaign for slain officer

BATON ROUGE – Neighbors of BRPD Corporal Montrell Jackson, one of the slain officers in Sunday's shooting, are hand making blue and black ribbons in his honor.

Whitney Dougherty and Jennifer Cupit, both neighbors of Jackson, are spear-heading the blue and black ribbon campaign.

The blue represents police officers while the black represents fallen officers.

"I texted him that morning with a short prayer, that I hoped he was safe. I never ever thought it was him. Out of the whole, you don't think it going to somebody you know," Dougherty said.

Dougherty said that Jackson was more that just her neighbor, he was her friend and leader of her community.

"He was about unity and love and his main focus as the president of our Homeowners Association and was about our community coming together," Dougherty said.

According to Cupit, Jackson was a "voice of unity."

"Montrell was a voice of unity in our neighborhood and he was trying to get everybody to come together and unify and we thought what better way to do that for him with finding something we can do together," Cupit said.

Several other residents have helped to make the ribbons and plan to place the ribbons on every home in the subdivision.

"The whole neighborhood is grieving and this is something we can do to show our love, show our support for law enforcement and grieve in a constructive way," Cupit said.
