Neighbors react to man getting shot in front of doorstep

BATON ROUGE - An investigation is ongoing after a man was shot on South Sherwood Forest near Major Oak Thursday morning.

Authorities said a 33-year-old driver knocked down a light pole and swiped another vehicle before he finally stopped, facing oncoming traffic.

That's when an off-duty security guard approached the driver to help him.

The two men got into an altercation and the guard pulled out his gun and shot the driver to subdue him.

The whole thing happened right in front of Katie Pate's doorstep.

"God was definitely watching over because He put that security guard at the right place at the right time to handle the situation. I'm just so grateful," said Pate.

She told News 2 reporter Jessica LeBlanc that the driver was irate and once police arrived they were able to gain some sort of control over the man.

"The policemen had gotten here and they had taken over. They tazed him, handcuffed him and as far as I know took him to the hospital," said Pate.

BRPD said the security guard will not be charged. As for the driver, he's still in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to his midsection, but he is expected to survive.
