Neighborhood evacuated after chemical fire
SLAUGHTER - An early morning chemical fire evacuated 150 people from their homes.
Residents woke to a loud explosion, followed by more explosions and a burning warehouse.
"The fire department started coming down the road, flashing their sirens," said Emmett McKey. "They asked everybody to evacuate."
The fire happened at La. 19 and Meadowood Drive, near the parish border. Monolyte Laboratories, Inc. stores non-toxic oil dispersant's at the facility.
Law enforcement closed down all traffic for hours as fire fighters worked to distinguish the blaze. Slaughter Fire Chief David Hughes said it was an excellent effort by everybody that responded.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is working to locate the source of the fire. No one was at the plant at the time of the fire.
