Need for security cameras in West Baton Rouge discussed

Related Story

WEST BATON ROUGE - Since Benedetto's Market opened its doors in 2004, customers were their first priority. One of their first moves was to beef up security.

"We have a pretty extensive system in the office that that helps us keep an eye on things when you can't be everywhere and see everything," said Aimee Riviere, Benedetto's scanning coordinator.

There are cameras in many corners of the store that can be angled to cover different areas to prevent theft, where ever it may happen.

The system also exists to deter more extreme crime, like the hostage situation that started at Noah's Pharmacy in Brusly and ended with a fatal standoff between police and Ray Charles Hayes Monday night.

Extensive security measures, like the one Benedetto's employs, are not mandatory in West Baton Rouge Parish.

"We had that on our agenda several years ago, trying to get all commercial people to put cameras up in their parking lots, and their buildings.  We recommend they do that," said West Baton Rouge President Riley "Pee Wee" Berthelot.

"I think it's a great idea," Riviere said.  "It could only be beneficial.  You keep yourself safe, your employees safe, and most importantly, your customers safe."

To make that practice mandatory could be a tough task.

"To pass an ordinance to say that they have to do it, I don't know if we have the authority to make a business, a private business, spend money on cameras," Berthelot said.
