BATON ROUGE - The story of Pete Maravich has been told a number of times, both on paper and the big screen. A week ago, LSU paved the way for a Maravich statue and now others are moving forward with plans to bring Pete's life to the silver screen again.

There are two Maravich movies in the works. In November, a filmmaker and former NBA star Steve Nash announced they're working on a feature film. For the past two years, writer and director Drew Tewell has been working on another story that goes beyond Maravich's time on basketball court.

"I believe that there's more to Pete Maravich than meets the eye," Tewell says. "I think there's a message there that can really make a difference in people's lives."

Tewell met actor and producer Damon Lipari on a movie set. The two began sharing ideas about the movie and Lipari has been cast as Pistol Pete.

It's the role of a lifetime for Lipari who began playing basketball at age six and idolized Pistol Pete growing up.

"It's an absolute dream," he said. "I've always wanted to play Pistol Pete in a movie."

Tewell and Lipari can't reveal much about the script but say the story will uncover "a lot about his personal life." They plan to begin production later this year.
