Mother wants trial for deadly hit and run
BATON ROUGE - A mother traveled more than 2,000 miles to Baton Rouge Friday to seek justice for her daughter who died in a hit and run crash four years ago.
Today Michele Carson spoke with News 2 about her fight to get answers.
"It's horrible. I mean people think that grief gets better in time, but it doesn't. It stays with you, and I have no closure," she said.
Mikel "Misha" Carson, 20, died in January 2010 on I-10 after she was hit by a car near College Drive. It happened after Carson was on foot checking on another woman who was in a different car crash.
The suspected driver that hit Carson, Christian Cvitanovich, was arrested ten days later after he brought his SUV to a body shop for repairs. Cvitanovich is tied to a well-known New Orleans seafood family.
Michelle Carson has waited for years to get answers on what happened that night in 2010. She's awaiting a trial to get closure.
"She was just really loved by a lot of people and I just feel so sad now, because I'm the only one that seems to be pursuing getting this trial," she said.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore says his office is taking this case very seriously.
"This is a difficult case. We have no easy cases. This is a typical case where we're going to have to fight and claw to present our case and have it decided by a judge and a jury," he said.
In the end, Carson just wants to explain to her granddaughter what happened with an ending to the story.
"I want to be able to say she had a trial, and grandma tried her best to make sure that your mother got justice because your mom died. She gave her life trying to help somebody else. That's what I want," she said.
The defense attorney says the delay isn't the court or district attorney's fault. They blame the long wait on a botched police investigation. A trial in the case is set for June.
