Mother of dead toddler speaks out
BATON ROUGE - Joy Green is putting the pieces back together after losing her youngest child last week.
"I never thought that when I dropped Angel off, on my way to work Friday that it would be my last time seeing my child," said Green fighting back tears.
The mother of the 22-month-old said she had no idea that Sheila Newman was operating her daycare with a revoked license.
"I just don't know. There's so much that I don't know because she just lied to me," said Green.
According to police reports, Newman, who was watching the toddler, left Angel in a hot van for an extended amount of time, which ultimately resulted in the child's death.
By the time the young girl was taken to the hospital, her body temperature was 108 degrees.
Green is an advocate for domestic abuse victims. She told News 2 she wants to help other parents because she doesn't want something like this to happen again.
"It's important to just have a relationship, some type of relationship with the person that you're even leaving your child with. And ask questions. Pop up, and just check," Green said.
Newman is facing charges of negligent homicide as well as obstruction of justice. The worker at the daycare, who was also arrested, April Wright, is also facing charges of negligent homicide.
Both women have bonded out since being arrested.
A fundraising web page has been set up to help cover Angel Green's funeral, which is scheduled for Saturday in Baton Rouge.
