Mosquitoes carrying West Nile found in BR area

BATON ROUGE - It's mosquito season, and they are here in large numbers.

East Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control says the insects are already causing problems, and testing positive for the West Nile Virus.

"Usually June is when we start seeing mosquitoes test positive and that's when we gear up out activity to try and educate the public as well as control the mosquitoes population," says Randy Vaeth with the abatement office.

Mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes.

To combat the problem crews are working around the clock, spraying high risk areas and homes of those who request service, like Darnisha Roberston.

"The mosquitoes here, it's like literally a fight if I turn on my lights at night, its like a fight for us to get in and out the house," says Robertson.

With the discovery of mosquitoes carrying West Nile in the area, she wants to be extra safe.

"I have a 4-year-old son, he can't come outside and enjoy his yard because of the mosquitoes."

Abatement officials say standing water is normally a breeding ground for the mosquitoes, so get rid of it wherever possible. They also suggest wearing insect repellant while outside and avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn.

"It is common, and that can lead to some problems. People kind of get use to it, and maybe ignore some of the suggestions and that's risky, we should all be aware," said Vaeth.  "We're alert, but not alarmed yet."
