More financial oversight coming to PC parish

NEW ROADS - Parish leaders made changes less than 24 hours after a News 2 report showed state investigators at Pointe Coupee Parish offices.

Parish Police Jurors voted unanimously Tuesday night to outsource some financial responsibilities to an accounting firm. It comes following stories News 2 aired that detailed questionable spending.

Those issues included lunches expensed to the parish for far more than was allowed, and cash payments used at parish recreation games. One receipt News 2 obtained shows supervisors paid nearly $675 for a lunch for 17 employees, far more than the allowed $10 per person in the parish travel policy.

"Last night's vote was a major step for Pointe Coupee," Police Juror Justin Cox said. "That's what I want and at the end of the day that's what the parish wants."

Workers who deal with finances said they aren't opposed to more oversight, but believe this will add an extra layer of red tape when it comes to getting things done.

"I think it's a waste," Assistant Treasurer Ann Leonard said. "I really do. It's like they will do everything I do and Becky does except they won't physically do it. It will still end up where we have to process it."

Leonard along with Parish Treasuer Becky Mayeux said they were caught off-guard when the police jury moved forward with the measure last night.

"I think it's a slap in the face," Leonard said. "It's knocking down our ability to do our job."

"Basically I've gone through seven audits, we have no write-ups or findings," Mayeux said. "Any accounting procedures have been done correctly. I'm very comfortable in my job and have done a great job for the parish."

The Parish authorized $40,000 to be spent on the outsourcing of the financial responsibilities. It's unclear when the accounting firm will begin working for the parish.
