More courtrooms needed in St. Helena Parish
GREENSBURG - In Saint Helena Parish plans are in works to make improvements to the courthouse where there's only one courtroom.
The parish is part of the 21st Judicial District along with Livingston and Tangipohoa parishes.
Since there's only one courtroom in Saint Helena, trials and hearings are sometimes pushed back for months and even years.
There's a $400,000 plan is in the works to make renovations and add an extra courtroom.
"A case could last years if we don't have that space. If we can get that extra space we could speed the cases up," said police jury president, Major Coleman.
Family court will be added to the district adding more cases to the parish dockets.
"Cases tend to get delayed a little more than we like to see that happen. St. Helena being the smaller of the three parishes sometimes suffer more extensively with that issue," said District Attorney, Scott Perrilloux.
Renovations on the courthouse could begin as soon as next month.
