Mom wanted for letting kids skip 137 days of school
BATON ROUGE- Police are looking for a woman who they said let her kids skip a combined 137 days of school this year.
Kenyetta Criss, 33, is accused of letting her 8-year old and 11-year old children miss at least 60 days of school each without excuses.
The Family and Youth Service Center drew up an agreement with Criss early in the school year where she assured them she'd get her children to school.
"She was gonna be certain that the kids got up, got to school on time, with her it was very simple, it was just about not getting the kids up on time," said Roxson Welch, the director of the FYSC. "And so she signed a contract that said she would do those things, and she didn't do those things."
Criss claims that she was keeping the kids out of school for her family's safety.
"Why would I not send them to school, there ain't nothing wrong with me, I'm not ignorant, why would I not send them to school, evidently there was something going on to where they could not make it there," Criss told News 2.
Criss said that she's trying to get out of an abusive relationship, and since the beginning of the school year she was shielding the kids from her husband by keeping them out of school. During that time she missed appointments with the truancy center and skipped out on services they offered to the family.
"For safety reasons, I did not do that, make that forward step to remain safe," said Criss.
Welch contends that there was help for the children, despite their mother's situation.
Criss told News 2 that she has a 13-year old that has been attending school regularly, while she kept her younger kids home. She said that her younger children are now back in class.
