Mom drowns trying to save child
CLINTON - There was grief in East Feliciana Tuesday night, after a mom died trying to save her child from the Amite River.
Martha Dartt of Denham Springs, dove in the river when she saw her child in distress. Sheriff deputies say the 38-year-old was able to get her child to safety, before she slipped and drowned.
"She was panicking for her child," said Murry Smith. "Which is natural, you know. She went to her kid's rescue, and she went down and didn't come back up."
She was with her three kids at the time, who ran to Smith for help when they never saw their mom resurface.
Smith said he and the sheriff searched for more than an hour and Dartt's body was eventually found trapped under a log.
Those who saved her later learned Dartt wasn't a strong swimmer.
