BATON ROUGE - A grand jury indicted a mother and daughter Wednesday for manslaughter after their elderly family member died of neglect inside their home.

"I have viewed photographs of the autopsy and it's some of the more horrendous ones I've seen in my 40-year career," East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said.

In September, Bessie Looney, 84, was found dead inside the home on N. Acadian Drive in Baton Rouge.  Investigators quickly charged Bessie's daughter, JoLeslie Looney, 53, and granddaughter, Lauren Looney, with cruelty to the infirmed and obstruction of justice.

Police say they found Bessie's body surrounded by flies and feces.

The coroner's office autopsy report showed Bessie died from a blood infection.

"For her to go that way, it's difficult to see, difficult to comprehend, particularly allegedly at the hands of family members," Moore said.

JoLeslie and Lauren have been in EBR Parish Prison since September 30th. Bail for each is set at $155,000.
