Metro Council members oppose police residency requirements

BATON ROUGE - A plan to require new police officers to live in the city died at Wednesday's Metro Council meeting.

The ordinance proposed by Councilwoman Chauna Banks-Daniel would have forced the Police Department to limit future hiring to applicants living within the city limits.

Wednesday's meeting was the first for the council since a police officer killed Alton Sterling on July 5, prompting days of protests and since the July 17 attack that killed three lawmen and wounded three others.

Banks-Daniel said she would be open to broadening the boundaries of the proposed ordinance to include the entire parish but the measure did not get enough votes for the council to schedule a public hearing.

Councilman Joel Boe, who opposed the plan, observed that all three officers killed in the ambush attack lived outside the parish.

News 2's Mark Armstrong will have more on today's council meeting on our evening broadcasts starting at 4 p.m.
