Mayor Broome to hold meetings on road tax plan

BATON ROUGE - In order to have better roads and transportation in East Baton Rouge Parish, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome says taxes may have to increase, but she wants your input before anything is finalized.
For the next month, she will be holding a series of public meetings around EBR to discuss her plan for the tax hike.
"This plan is about increasing mobility in our community and it's really about the future of our community going into the 21st century," Broome said.
Under the plan, parish property taxes would rise five mills for 30 years depending on the cost of a home.
For example, properties worth less than $75,000 would not be effected. However, a home costing $150,000 would face an additional $37.50 per year in property taxes. A $350,000 property would have an added $137.50 in yearly property taxes under the same plan.
Money from the tax hike would be used on projects such as expanding roads and improving street lighting in certain areas.
Broome hopes that as many residents as possible come to these meeting so the tax plan can be clearly explained and all questions can be answered.
"We're coming to the public for their input," she said. "Certainly we're open to making adjustments and we're glad that the public is interested in participating in this process."
A vote on the tax hike will occur this fall.
