BATON ROUGE- Dozens of law enforcement vehicles escorted a hearse carrying the body of U.S. Deputy Marshal Josie Wells back to his home in Mississippi.

The route was dotted with groups of firefighters and civilians displaying American flags and saluting as the procession passed. The groups in the procession included police, sheriff deputies, and federal agents.

Wells was gunned down Tuesday in north Baton Rouge when he attempted to serve a warrant in a double murder investigation. The suspect, 31-year-old Jamie Croom of New Roads, died from wounds he received in the shootout with police.

Wells was married, and the couple was expecting a baby boy. Wells was a native of Jackson County, Miss., and the son of a retired sheriff's deputy. His brother and sister are pursuing careers in law enforcement.
