Many stay behind during temporary evacuation order in Ascension Parish
ST. AMANT- In Ascension Parish, hundreds are back in their homes after an evacuation order was lifted overnight.
Parish officials feared high water levels could put their homes in jeopardy. Devin Duplessis and his family stayed behind in the St. Amant neighborhood after getting the notice.
"If the water's gonna come up, I'm gonna watch my house," he said. "I'm gonna watch it go."
By midnight parish officials said water levels were safe at the Amite River at Port Vincent and at the Marvin Braud pump station.
Desiree Veasey also lives in the evacuation area. She said, "It was pretty scary waiting. But I just prayed to God and asked him to protect all of us."
Although Veasey decided to take her chances, she doesn't blame those who packed up and left.
"I think they wanted to be safe than sorry," she said. "I think they were relieved when they came back and everything was ok."
Acy and Sorrento were also part of the evacuation area.
