Managing the Flow- AROD
BATON ROUGE- The state Department of Transportation and Development says its traffic monitoring and communication system is good.
The key to making it great is drivers using it.
There are four Traffic Monitoring Centers across the state, but the one in Baton Rouge can keep an eye on every corner of Louisiana. It's a 24-7 operation focused solely on seeing and reporting road problems to you.
Message boards, both permanent and mobile, are part of getting the word out, but DOTD also uses Twitter to tell drivers about closures, accidents or jam-ups, like the 40-car pile up in New Orleans East Thursday.
While drivers say smoke or fog caused the crash, authorities aren't sure. What DOTD is sure of is if there was a reported problem prior to the accident, their system would have let drivers know.
If you want to stay up-to-date with what's going on on the roads, you can sign up for DOTD's Twitter feed, or check out live traffic cameras on our WBRZ app for iPhone and Android.
