Man wanted in overnight killing surrenders
PRAIRIEVILLE - Sheriff's deputies said a man wanted in connection with an overnight homicide in Prairieville surrendered to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Wednesday morning.
Deputies said 23-year-old Kevin Sheppard is accused him of killing 22-year-old Lewis Sanchez of Denham Springs and wounding 18-year-old Joshua Perez of Gonzales.
Investigators said Sheppard, Sanchez and Perez were riding with two other men in an SUV just before 2 a.m. and had stopped on Josh Brown Road to buy drugs. Detectives said some of the men were arguing with each other when Sheppard pulled out a gun and started shooting.
Investigators think the argument started over a few bucks.
"Something insignificant, it sounds like they were arguing over a ten dollar debt from some months ago," said Chief Deputy Tony Bacala. "It sounds like Sheppard just lost it, the argument went to him and someone just kind of insulted him during the course of the argument, he lost it, pulled out a gun and started shooting."
Deputies said after the shooting Sheppard fled the scene with another man, Michael Lomas, leaving Sanchez, Perez, and Perez's brother behind. Later deputies said Lomas's mother brought him by the sheriff's office to meet with investigators.
Bacala said Lomas was integral in getting an identification on Sheppard.
Neighbors near the shooting were upset someone was murdered so close to their home.
"Those guys don't even live back here, this is a quiet community, everbody is close knit and they come back here and caused a rupture in everything," said Justin Bennett, who was upset violence crept so close to home.
The sheriff's office charged Sheppard with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, carrying a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal use and carrying of weapons. They said Sheppard also has 13 prior arrests and was convicted of simple robbery in Lafayette, where he was sentenced to three years probation in 2011.
