Man single handedly saves two from drowning

BATON ROUGE - A man's heroic actions saved two boys who nearly drowned Saturday morning at the Dove Creek apartment complex on Airline Hwy.

"The family was all around them and they were on the ground crying and stuff," witness Julia Connor said. "It was just really sad."

"You never expect something like that to happen," 26-year-old Sherman Jackson said. He was at the pool watching his own group of kids when the twelve and 14-year-old boys were found by their guardian unresponsive underwater.

Jackson grabbed the two boy's lifeless bodies from the water and started CPR.

"There were a bunch of little kids here so it was pretty much I had to make it happen I had to do it," Jackson said.

Both boys were swollen with water and purple, he said.

He first started working on the boy who he thought was in the worst shape. He resuscitated the one child and then moved on to the other one.

"Wasn't breathing or moving or anything like that."

After a while, Jackson's mouth to mouth and chest compressions pumped life back into the second child's body as well.

"It was a relief," he said. "It was just two innocent kids, and it makes me feel better knowing that they're here now...They have a future."

Doctors at the hospital told Jackson both boys were stable and would make it out healthy.

But the man who saved the day is not willing to use the word hero to describe him.

"I wouldn't call myself a hero," he said. "I was just at the right place at the right time. I just thank God I was here."
