BATON ROUGE - A man was set on fire after getting knocked out and robbed over the weekend, according to Baton Rouge Police.

Investigators said the 37-year-old victim told them he woke up near Greenwell Springs Road and Choctaw Drive, noticed he was missing change out of his pocket and that his pants were on fire.

Police said he was able to put the fire out himself and ask a passing motorist for help. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for second degree burns.

He told police a group of five young men attacked him after asking him for a smoke.

"The juvenile subjects asked for a cigarette, of course he didn't have a cigarette and continues walking on his way, is struck from behind, and knocked unconscious," explained Cpl. Don Coppola with BRPD.

Coppola said they have a strong presence in the area the attack happened in, which is the 70805 ZIP code.

"We also have BRAVE officers in the area as well. So the coverage is there, the presence is there," he said.

Despite that presence, some people living there told News 2 they still worry about what happens after dark.

"If it was during the daytime, yeah, don't nobody do stuff during the day. Everything happen at night if it do happen," said a local resident, who said they walk in the area often.

This case is still under investigation. Coppola said the people involved face charges of aggravated arson once they're caught.
