Major expansion at Walker High moving forward

Related Story

WALKER - A major expansion is coming to Walker High School in Livingston Parish as the project is set to go out for bids this week.

The $20 million project will add more than 30 new classrooms along with career and technology classrooms, a new band room, a new library and a new cafeteria. Walker Principal Jason St. Pierre says the expansion will combat overcrowding and give students more space to learn.

"We've just been adding students and adding students without adding existing buildings, so now this will allow us to have a state-of-the-art gymnasium, classrooms, band room, expand our cafeteria where we can accommodate those students at lunch and better accommodate the students once they're on campus," he said.

The school expansion comes after Walker High put in nearly $2 million to upgrade its football stadium. Right now work is also going on to renovate the school's field house. All of this is possible after voters in the Walker area passed a $25 million bond issue two years ago.

The latest project will go out for bids for 25 days. Work to expand Walker High is expected to be finished in two years during the 2017-18 school year.
