LSU health cuts may affect thousands

BATON ROUGE- The LSU Health Care system is making nearly $7 million in cuts involving the Earl K. Long Hospital System.

As part of those moves, the EKL Mid City Pediatric Clinic on North Foster Drive will close March 2nd.  LSU officials say it is necessary to deal with the state's mid year budget cuts.

Dr. Stewart Gordon, Chief of Pediatrics for EKL, says there are many concerns with the move.  Dr. Gordon says many families may have a tough time finding a primary care physician that will accept new Medicaid patients.

The clinic has started notifying families of the closure while helping them look for other doctors.  Dr. Gordon says emergency rooms may be flooded with parents who have no other options for care.

Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Chairman Bruce Greenstein says the LSU Health Care system has caused the problem by overspending its budget.  He says some of the budget moves proposed by the university are necessary to deal with the state's mid year budget shortfall.
