LSU files petition for annexation of property into BR

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana State University is now among the land owners within the boundaries of the proposed city of St. George to ask for annexation into the city limits of Baton Rouge.

While LSU's main campus is already inside the Baton Rouge city limits, the LSU Board of Supervisors submitted a petition Wednesday for annexation of the campus's Fire and Emergency Training Institute and Ben Hur Research Station, which are both situated outside of city limits east of Nicholson Drive in southern East Baton Rouge Parish.

"LSU and the city of Baton Rouge have a mutually beneficial relationship," said LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander. "We prefer to remain part of this city, where we have been since 1869. We find no justification to merit having our land divided between two jurisdictions, and have concerns that such division could adversely impact services critical to our students."

Wednesday's petition from university officials follows a similar annexation request submitted yesterday by the L'Auberge Casino, located in the same part of EBR Parish that the LSU institute and research station occupy. Both annexation requests will be voted on by the Metro Council later in October.

Efforts to establish the city of St. George have met with resistance from officials in Baton Rouge in the form of the city seeking annexations from land owners of property that borders the existing city. With more land owners and businesses opting for annexation into Baton Rouge, the St. George effort is weakened by reduced revenues generated in the proposed city and smaller city boundaries.

"If LSU wants all their property in one area, that's fine, we'll respect that," said Lionel Rainey, St. George Spokesman. "Hopefully the City of Baton Rouge will respect the 100,000 residents who are unsatisfied with what they're currently receiving and would like to be able to go to the polls and determine their future."
