LSU chancellor talks about being finalist CSU job

BATON ROUGE - A formal offer to lead another university could soon be on its way for LSU Chancellor Mike Martin.

Colorado State University announced Martin is the finalist for the same position at their school.  Martin publicly expressed his interest in the position earlier this week, saying he'd strongly consider it.

Martin said he's known about the opportunity since December, and officially invited for a visit in January. Since then he says he and his wife have made a total of three trips to Colorado, one of which was to meet the governor.

Martin said today whether he accepts the job or not isn't about money, but a decision based on where he could make a the biggest difference.

"Despite the considerable fiscal challenges faced by LSU over the past four years, Jan and I have developed a deep affection for the people of LSU, Baton Rouge and Louisiana," Martin said in a statement released today.  "This is a truly great university and I am proud to serve it."

"I have not sought other professional opportunities, but a few have approached me. It has been my plan to finish my career at LSU, but sometimes plans change... My conversations with Colorado State are in no way related to recent changes at the System Office."

If Martin does leave, it will be LSU's second high-profile departure this year. LSU System President John Lombardi was fired April 27th, and former System President Bill Jenkins was named as an interim replacement.

Jenkins says should Martin accept the job at CSU, a nationwide search for his replacement will begin.

"If we do anything now it will be inappropriate. We need to wait for that period of time and then we'll proceed from there," said Jenkins.

Students we spoke to said they trust the university will find a suitable replacement

"They always try to help us out the best way they can. So I think they are going to do the right thing," said Connor Bourgeious.

Former board member Pat McConathy, an LSU alum, led the search committee at Colorado State.
