LSU announces Alumnus of the Year
BATON ROUGE - LSU has named it 2015 Alumnus of the Year.
Newton Thomas received the honor early this week. He graduated from LSU with a degree in electrical engineering in 1967. Sixteen years later, he founded the Newtron Group, which became the 15th largest electrical contractor in the country in 2012. While Newton was surprised, others say it was a no-brainer.
"I'm in total awe. This was totally unexpected," Thomas told News 2's Whitney Vann. "I'm aware of some of the people who've won this before me and what they've accomplished. To be included in that group is an unbelievable honor."
"We couldn't be more proud of what he's accomplished, both as an alumnus of LSU and a role model for students on the way," explains LSU President F. King Alexander.
Newton will be inducted into the LSU Alumni Association's Hall of Distinction in March.
