LSP still investigating I-12 wreck this morning
BATON ROUGE - Drivers faced gridlock along I-12 in East Baton Rouge Parish today after an 18-wheeler lost its load of pipes in a construction zone near the Amite River bridge.
Traffic was backed up for hours while crews cleared the wreck. Six people were injured, but none killed.
Kim Hill, a trucker out of North Carolina, told News 2 she very nearly wrecked in that same construction zone because one driver was on their phone and another was texting.
"I was already going like five miles below the speed limit; I had to brake which caused a chain reaction," she said. "It's already dangerous enough because we're going through a construction zone... but they're not paying attention.
Hill said construction zones around Baton Rouge are clearly marked, but there are still things that can catch inattentive drivers off-guard and create another traffic nightmare.
"They give notice, but sometimes they don't give notice that the lanes are going to narrow," she said.
Troopers are still investigating the crash.
