DONALDSONVILLE - Louisiana State Police identified the person killed in a series of wrecks early Tuesday morning on LA 1 as a Plaquemine man.

Trooper Jared Sandifer said Donald L. Jenkins, 62, died in one of the three wrecks which caused a 19-vehicle pileup in Ascension Parish north of Donaldsonville.

Investigators said foggy conditions likely contributed to the wreck, which happened around 5 a.m.

"You couldn't see nothing, you couldn't see lights, you couldn't see nothing, I couldn't see up my driveway the fog was that bad, I mean the mailbox is right here, I couldn't see it from the front door," said Jake Coupel, who lives just a half-mile away from the scene of the accident.

Troopers said two sugar cane trucks were among the vehicles involved in the collisions. Several people were transported to the hospital with injuries, but none were life-threatening.

"Whenever you're driving in foggy conditions the number one way to stay safe is to reduce your speed. You need to slow down. You're not going to be able to see red lights in front of you, red lights at intersections, you just need to slow down your speed," said Sandifer.

It took nine hours for cleanup crews to haul away all of the vehicles and take measurements for the investigation.

No citations were issued at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing.
