Long detour from Ascension road closure

Related Story

ASCENSION - Neighbors living on and near Bayou Manchac say a road closure is sending them on a 45-minute detour.

Alligator Bayou Road closed nearly two weeks ago when two flood pumps were installed to drain water out of Alligator Bayou, Spanish Lake and Bluff Swamp.

The pipes stretch across the road draining nearly 140 thousand gallons of water a minute into Bayou Manchac.

The pumps have been running non-stop for nearly two weeks, and about two feet have drained since then.

What's usually a ten minute trip from Alligator Bayou Road into Prairieville, has turned into a 45 minute commute either south through St. Gabriel or north into East Baton Rouge Parish.

Since the area needs to be drained relatively often, neighbors want to see the pumps and pipes buried underneath Alligator Bayou Road to prevent future closures.

Ascension Drainage said there are plans for permanent pumps, but there's no time frame on when.

Alligator Bayou Road should re-open this weekend if there are no significant rain events between now and then.
