Litter ordinance changes up for council debate

Related Story

BATON ROUGE-  The Department of Public Works wants city leaders to sign off on big changes to the litter law.

DPW is taking over operating the city-parish litter court and wants to strengthen the consequences for nuisances like over-grown lots, dump sites and illegal signs.

If the proposed changes are approved, DPW will give you one warning letter to clean up a cluttered yard, then you head to court.  If you've got an illegal sign, you're not even getting a warning, just a fine.  And if you get cited for anything, it'll cost you $125 to clear it up, after that, it's double.  DPW is hoping the changes send a message to just clean up your own mess.

DPW Director William Daniel said, "A clean city has less crime and these are all very positive things. We want to get the city cleaned up, we don't want there to be areas that look bad."

Metro Council will take up the changes in committee tomorrow and consider them in a vote next week.
