Litter clogging Iberville bayous

Related Story

PLAQUEMINE- Iberville Parish leaders are starting a campaign to stop littering in their bayous.

Leaders fear litter in the city's streets and neighborhoods is winding up in nearby bayous, and could be detrimental to tourism as well as the ecosystem.

"It makes the bayou look terrible and that's the first thing you see when you drive into our city," said John Clark, the parish's environmental manager.  "Not only that, it affects water quality. Any type of substance that enters the bayou that isn't supposed to be there is gonna use up oxygen."

Clark thinks much of the trash doesn't come from near the bayou, but travels from a distance via the parish's storm drains.

"If you live away from the bayou and you accidentally litter or litter for whatever reason, its gonna get washed directly into drains in our bayou," said Clark.

Currently the state Department of Environmental Quality is monitoring the water and testing oxygen levels. Clark says you can help by picking up litter when you see it, or join a trash pickup program.
