Law enforcement community mourns slain officer
MORGAN CITY - Law enforcement agencies from across the state gathered with people in Morgan City today to lay an officer killed in the line of duty to rest.
Funeral services for Sgt. Rick Riggenbach with the Chitimacha Police Department were scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Crossing Place Church in Franklin, followed by burial at a Morgan City cemetery.
Riggenbach was shot and killed during a confrontation this weekend. Authorities said Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, fired at him and other officers who responded to reports Thibodeaux was walking down the street with a shotgun and a gas can. Two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies were also injured in the shootout.
Investigators said before the confrontation Thibodeaux shot another man, Eddie Lyons, and set fire to his mobile home.
Riggenbach served for 15 years in local law enforcement, including 10 years as a St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputy before becoming a Chitimacha police officer.
