BATON ROUGE, La. - The late Rev. Charles T. Smith was honored Saturday morning with the dedication of a street bearing his name.

America Street between South 10th and Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive was renamed "Charles T. Smith Dr." in honor of the pastor who served the city of Baton Rouge at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years.

"It means a lot to me, to my family, that the community would show this kind of appreciation for the work that he gave," says Rev. Smith's son Fred Jeff Smith.

"He would feel like it was more than he deserved, but as his son I can tell you it's everything that he deserved and I'm very proud of him," Rev. Smith's son added.

Rev. Smith died last September at the age of 80. Smith was a prominent leader in the 80s to overhaul East Baton Rouge Public Schools.

As she broke down in tears, Rev. Smith's widow Eula Smith said, "There's no one thing that I can say that I miss, because I miss him every day, every hour, everything."

The dedication of the street took place with a ceremony to celebrate the life of Rev. Smith. Charles T. Smith Dr. intersects with Eddie Robinson Sr. Dr. at the site of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
