Last-minute donations roll in before 2015

BATON ROUGE - The Salvation Army and other charities across Baton Rouge saw a last-minute surge of donations Wednesday, the last day for this year's tax deduction.

The Salvation Army says it's one of the busiest days of the year for donations. The charity on Airline Highway saw around 400 people scrambling to meet the deadline. Many who brought in donations say it's a win-win deal to donate.

"Well that is an incentive because we don't want to pay more taxes than we have to, but at the same time it feels good to be helping somebody that might need those items," said Ellene Berry.

"We find that there are those who are in need worse than we are, so when we are in a position to be a blessing to others we need to take that opportunity to do so," said Rev. Daniel Smith.

Both Berry and Smith donated items Wednesday to be able to claim a tax deduction. Donors brought in clothes, electronics and household appliances. Some even donated used cars. Most donors News 2 spoke with say they try to give back a few times a year with the tax incentives adding icing on the cake.

"Every year my husband and I go through our clothing and see what we haven't been wearing and if we have anything extra like small appliances, coffee pots, those types of things then it's just a great time to get rid of them," said Berry.

"It's not just about the end of the year, it's about doing it all year long. This is not my first time coming this year," said Smith. "I've been coming all through the year. It all adds up for taxes also, so it does have a way of coming back to you."

The Salvation Army says donated items will be sorted and sent to its stores across the area. The money made from selling items stays in the community by going straight into the drug and alcohol rehab program at the Salvation Army.
