La. House sends sales tax plan to Senate

BATON ROUGE  - Amid the possibility of a negotiation collapse, state lawmakers in the House of Representatives were able to pass a sales tax deal to help fund government late Friday afternoon.

The decision came during the third special session.

The proposal keeps just under half of the expiring extra 1% tax added in a previous session to deal with a budget issue then.  The .45 percent tax passed the House with 74 votes.

"Cheers erupt in the chamber," an official said and was reported by the Associated Press.

The Louisiana Senate will decide on the measure next.

The state budget cycle begins July 1.

Republican House Speaker Taylor Barras urged lawmakers Thursday night to continue tax talks, to try to break the stalemate. But he described his chamber at an "extreme deadlock."
